President's Message

This is the most exciting, engaging quarter of the year for FPA! By the next time I write you a letter, our two colossal events for the year, the Allied Professionals Summit and OC Financial Planning Day, will be in the books! As I write this, the dozens and dozens of planners who volunteer for the chapter will be going on a Newport Harbor cruise together within the week. We had an outstanding chapter picnic earlier in the Spring. It's really a great family to be a part of!

I want to call attention to the Allied Professionals Summit and OC Financial Day and call you to engage with these two events. The AP Summit is our annual big event to bring the other professionals we work and team with: CPAs, Estate Planning Attorneys, Real Estate professionals, Insurance professionals... Bring value to your team by helping them expand their network and knowledge base. In turn, our profession is expanding its awareness and visibility as a true profession. Be engaged in the success of the professionals you do business with and invite them today! Details and registration can be found at www.AlliedProfessionalsSummit.org.

OC Financial Planning Day is our annual, huge opportunity to engage with the community by offering free, objective financial planning advice to the public. This event was developed as a coalition between the FPA, the CFP Board, the Foundation for Financial Planning and the US Conference of Mayors. This year we are excited to announce that we have the support of the Orange County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Lisa Bartlett, and Orange County Treasurer, Shari Freidenrich, CPA. We are expecting Honorable Bartlett and Huntington Beach Mayor Jim Katapodis to attend the event. Will you? We've had hundreds of attendees in the past, and we want to make sure of two things: that everyone has an opportunity to meet with a CFP Professional®, and that we've told everyone and spread the word every way we can about this event! What a great opportunity and way to give back! Details and registration for both the public and volunteers can be found at www.OCFinancialPlanningDay.org.

And lastly, I have one more request of you. Will you consider setting aside 2 hours per month as a standing slot that you'd entertain the thought of Pro-Bono planning in your own practice? This is something that I implemented over a year ago in my own practice, and it's rewarding and fulfilling. There are many, many families that could use your expertise, but don't have the resources to pay you for your advice. Would you be willing to tell your network that you've freed up time to take Pro-Bono cases? Would you be willing to serve your profession, your chapter, your community and yourself by making that commitment? I'll talk more about this initiative at the Quarter Education Meeting, but I want to start the dialogue now.

Will you join me and us in offering 2 hours per month of Pro-Bono financial planning?

Thank you again for being the top chapter that we are and allowing me to serve such an engaging group. I'm proud of us and the excellence and the engagement our chapter possesses! Thank you!

Wil Smith, CFP®
FPAOC President 2016

Pro Bono/Community Outreach

Each year, FPAOC is pleased to be able financial education to students in the Simon Foundation's Simon Scholars program. Our volunteers spent two days in June with the program participants this year.

The Simon Scholars program is a unique 6-year scholarship program that begins during a student's junior year in high school and continues through 4 years of college. It is designed to help students facing difficult life and economic circumstances to excel academically and socially so they can successfully complete a 4-year college degree.
