President's Message

In the last newsletter, I put out a call for all of us to “Engage!” in our chapter, our community, and our profession, and I’m so thrilled to see such a large wave in response!

We’ve had members getting involved with our state representatives to both show them we’re here as advocates for our clients and our community and to lean on us as a resource!

We’ve had members getting involved and leveraging their networks to book OUTSTANDING speakers for our quarterly education meetings!

We’ve had members who want to be involved with sharing the value of financial planning to the underserved in Orange County!

Right now is when a lot of the heavy lifting goes on for two large events that we’re extremely proud to put together: our Allied Professionals Summit on September 23rd and OC Financial Planning Day on October 15th. We have a great tradition of success in bringing awareness of financial planning to our community, and I’d love your help with planning these events to continue our success! Both teams (Allied Professionals and Community Outreach) meet monthly. Please reach out to Colin Kilpatrick, our Volunteer Development Chair, and let him know that you’re interested in helping.

We truly have a tremendous profession and an outstanding chapter. I’m thankful for all of us engaged in the same mission, and I’m thankful for the volunteers giving their time to make this all possible. We work diligently, but there’s nothing better than seeing the genuine smiles of our team at play! We have our annual FPA picnic right around the corner on May 22nd, so make sure you register your family! Last year was a blast, with great food and terrific games for us and all of our kids.

Thank you again. It’s my honor to go to work with such a fun, engaging team!

Wil Smith, CFP®
FPAOC President 2016

Chapter News

Storm the Capital – Sacramento

In March, Orange County chapter members Mark Prendergast, Evelyn Zohlen, Steve Carder, Kathleen Boyd and Janet Larsen joined others from the 13 chapters comprising FPA of California for 3rd Annual FPA Advocacy Day. They met with Dave Jones, Insurance Commissioner, plus representatives from the Department of Business Oversight, the Treasurer's office, and the Controller's office. They also met with various Senators and Assembly Members and their staff to give perspective on legislative and regulatory issues affecting Financial Planners and Advisors. The meetings were very productive, and they strengthened the lines of communications that our California chapters have been working hard to establish.

Our Advocacy efforts are an investment in the future. We are at a critical juncture as we evolve into a recognized profession. On June 22, we will be in Washington, D.C. for the 3rd Annual FPA Advocacy Day. Plus, in September, we will meet locally with the legislators in their district offices for Advocacy Week. Please consider joining us! Contact Janet Larsen if you are interested.

Volunteer of the Quarter

Congratulation to Mark Prendergast, our Volunteer of the Quarter! We are very grateful to have Mark as an active member of our chapter. He has a long history with the Financial Planning Association and is always willing to lend a helping hand both locally and nationally. He served as Advocacy Chair for our chapter the last two years and continues to actively grow ties in both Sacramento and Washington, D.C., to further FPA and financial planning. Previously, Mark served on the national FPA Board of Directors, plus he has been the FPA of Central California treasurer, president-elect, president, chair and government relations chair. He is also currently active on our Programs Committee, helping secure speakers for the Quarterly Education Meetings. He is CFO and Director of Tax Strategies at Inspired Financial in Huntington Beach.
