President's Message

“I think you’ll find a different caliber of financial planner.”

A few years ago, a friend and mentor of mine listened politely to me, in his office, as I complained about what I perceived was the state of our industry. At the time I felt that our industry was rich in rhetoric, but lacking in practicing true ethics and integrity.

Past President Glenn Woody softly chuckled and in his Texan way said, “You know, Wil, I can appreciate that. Tell you what, you ought to come down to a meeting of the Financial Planning Association, I think you’ll find a different caliber of financial planner there.”

Could there be? Could there be financial planners who took integrity seriously?

I came to the next meeting and almost as soon as I sat down for the first time, Glenn slapped me on the back and said “What are you doing sitting down? Get involved!”

I’m ecstatic to be involved. I’m ecstatic to share my passion about true financial planning and its worth and value to our community. I’m ecstatic to be ENGAGED in our chapter; ENGAGED with first-time visitors; ENGAGED in our profession; ENGAGED with our neighbors in our community; ENGAGED with our government leaders; ENGAGED with those in search of Pro-Bono education; ENGAGED with our youth; ENGAGED with you, my friends!

I found that different caliber of financial planner Glenn was talking about. They’re the 270 faces surrounding me at our Quarterly Education Meetings, and the 540 total members in our chapter. They’re the many dozens of financial planners who volunteer at OC Financial Planning Day and at events across our county. I found friends whose spark and enthusiasm are infectious.

And now that I’ve found you, and you’re exactly what was promised, I want to share.

And I want you to share your passion by becoming ENGAGED this year.

We average about 30 first-time guests each meeting. Thirty people have made the intimidating first step of their own volition. You know what helps them the most? “Good morning! I’m Wil, glad to meet you!” Let’s ENGAGE!

We met with numerous government officials last year and we’re looking to meet with many more this year. They were all very receptive and looking for how to better their community. We can help! Let’s ENGAGE!

We had an awesome Allied Professionals Summit, and we’ll do it again this year. CPAs, attorneys and more are coming to us to learn more about our industry. Let’s ENGAGE!

I’m so excited to have joined such a spectacular chapter, and I’m honored to have been called to lead this year. We’re a different caliber, and I’m proud of that. Now let’s show our community, our neighbors and our friends what the Financial Planning Association of Orange County can do by engaging them at every level!

Wil Smith, CFP®
FPAOC President 2016

FPAOC Wins Awards at National Conference

Our chapter proudly accepted two Outstanding Achievement Awards at the FPA Chapter Leaders Conference in Denver in December. The first award recognizes the chapter for the I AM FPA of Orange County video which highlights our chapter’s purpose and members and has been used to grow our chapter membership. The second award recognizes the chapter’s strong relationship with the California State Controller’s Office and how we successfully linked their 2014 Manage Your Money Week with our Orange County Financial Planning Day.

Volunteer of the Year

Congratulations to Karmen Younes, FPAOC’s Volunteer of the Year for 2015! Karmen helps our chapter in a number of key areas. She is active in our Pro Bono/Community Outreach Committee and has played important roles planning, promoting, and coordinating events for the Illumination Foundation, Mercy House, and our own Financial Planning Day. She has a reoccurring role on our Programs Committee, managing the A/V for our partner and speaker presentations and working as a speaker wrangler. For our Public Relations Committee, Karmen is working to bring our social media up to date, strategically increasing our presence in the financial planning community and helping to grow our membership. For her involvement in FPAOC, Karmen was also awarded a 2015 Keir FPA Scholarship. Congratulations, Karmen!

Volunteer of the Quarter

Congratulations to Kevin Henss, our Volunteer of the Quarter! Kevin is a longtime volunteer and past board member who is appreciated for always helping out when needed. Kevin’s wise guidance helped map the chapter’s communication efforts, and he still is active on the Communications Committee. Thank you, Kevin, for all of your hard work!
