2014 – A Year of Promise and Responsibility
2014 is upon us with all of its promise. We are at five years and counting in this bullish equity market and with that success, it reminds us of the necessity to reach out to the investing public about the value of financial planning as a profession and the difference that we can make in their lives and in the lives of their families. That’s because not everyone who can, has taken advantage of the investment market’s success. Many investors remain fearful of the risk and volatility in stocks. Many investors do not understand how important the role of investment planning is for their future. It is our mission to explain this to them and allow them to share more completely in the growth of the American economy.
The Financial Planning Association (FPA) has a noble goal, to advance the profession of financial planning. This goal is not for our benefit as providers, but for the benefit of the financial consumer. Everything we do has to be directed toward this goal. Our society has made financial success available to all those who seek it, but truly made it convoluted with all of the legal complications related to money. The legal regime governing taxes, regulatory concerns for our clients’ businesses, estate transfers (far more than merely estate taxation), investments, and insurance (both as investment and as protection) cries out for guidance. Financial planning as a profession provides that guidance for the public. Those of us who work in the profession, CFP®s primarily, are the ones uniquely qualified to guide our clients through all of the decision points in their financial lives that can maximize their opportunities. Not just for our clients directly, but for their children, grandchildren, and even great- grandchildren who may never know how our guidance has changed their lives.
FPA is here to allow you to achieve these goals for your clients. Our Quarterly Education Meetings (QEM) will each have six hours of presentations with our goal of five hours of Continuing Education Units each time. The QEMs are well known for their high quality education and networking opportunities. In fact, we’re nationally known for the excellence of these meetings. Additionally, we’re stepping up our Public Relations outreach efforts to increase our exposure to the public and to other financial professionals. By popular demand, we will be reinstituting Financial Planning Day in October concurrently with the national Financial Planning Week. Of course, our increasingly popular Allied Professionals Summit, also in October, is designed to bringing the financial community closer together with the goal of collaboration in serving our joint clients. Finally, our Allied Professional mixers, Advisors in Transition and NexGen communities, and Discussion Groups (Fullerton, Irvine, South County), all serve their specific purpose with a common networking component.
The thing for you to do is to make a difference. In fact, it’s really your responsibility. Make this happen for you in your practice with your clients and even better, make this happen for all of us by participating in the work of the chapter. Believe me, if you can spare as little as an hour per month, we will find fulfilling work that furthers our chapter. Aileen Danley, CFP® of our Volunteer Development committee, will be happy to share with you ways that YOU could be a difference maker. You will make loads of new friends who are as passionate as you are about financial planning as a profession.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS
Chapter Leaders Conference
FPA of Orange County was well-represented and well-recognized at the annual Chapter Leaders Conference (CLC) held in Denver, CO, this past November. Our chapter took home three awards! We received Gold Level Achievement, the highest rating for an FPA Chapter, for our Roadmap to Success submission, a Blue Ribbon Best Practice Award, and an Outstanding Achievement Award for our FPAOC Event Bulletin.
The conference brought together leaders from the 93 FPA chapters in 43 states around the country. Our chapter representatives included: Howard Erman, President; Andi Kang, President-Elect; Wil Smith, Pro Bono and Community Relations Chair; Fred Giron, Communications Chair; and Carol Bobke, Chapter Administrator. They were also joined by our own Mark Prendergast, our current Government Relations Chair, who was at his final CLC as a national FPA Board Member, and Evelyn Zohlen, who was finishing out her term as President of FPA of California and starting her term as a national FPA Board Member. Thank you and congratulations, Mike Weber, Bill Cuthbertson, and all of the FPAOC Board of Directors for your hard work!
2013 Volunteer of the Year
Congratulations to Aileen Danley, FPA of Orange County’s 2013 Volunteer of the Year! Aileen has given her time to support Financial Planning Day, Allied Professionals Summit, and the Volunteer Development Committee. This year, Aileen joins the Board of Directors as the chair of the Volunteer Development Committee. Aileen knows the personal and professional value of getting more involved in the FPA – stop by and meet Aileen at the “Do 1 Thing” board at the February Quarterly Meeting. She can help you get involved as well!
Aileen Danley, FPA
Volunteer of the Quarter
Our Volunteer of the Quarter is Bob Welge. Bob is an integral part of our Program Committee. He works tirelessly with the CFP® Board to get CE approved for our members. At Quarterly Education Meetings, Bob keeps the day’s program on schedule, which often includes helping the speakers keep track of time or even rounding up the rest of us attendees so we don’t run late. Bob is greatly deserving of this award!

Committee Spotlight: Volunteer Development Committee
The Volunteer Development Committee was established to implement the chapter’s initiative to grow the volunteer base and to provide strong prospects for leadership transitions. One of our goals is to help members get to know one another in the organization and to match interested members to volunteer needs in the chapter. We help our volunteers bond, distinguish outstanding volunteers to identify future leaders and provide recognition to our volunteer base.
We put into action a friendly competition among the committees to best implement our chapter’s WHY to build team spirit and connect all the volunteers. Winners earn a prized reward event. We also arrange a summer volunteer social and a winter holiday party to show our appreciation for our dedicated teammates.
Our committee is much involved with all the other committees to meet our objectives. We participate in chapter committee events like Membership’s NexGen or Advisors in Transition group meetings, Allied Professional’s mixers, Pro Bono’s community events to name a few.
We highlight committee participation at New Members Breakfast and encourage chapter members to Do 1 Thing. Please come visit our table at the Quarterly Education meetings and discover how you can become involved in our chapter and grow personally and professionally. If you are interested in joining us, you are welcome to contact Aileen Danley, the Volunteer Development Committee Chair.

Free Webinar: Running a Healthy and Profitable Financial Planning Business
Wednesday, Feb 19, 2014
(note: Webinar will be recorded for those who cannot listen live.)
Using your strong principals of financial planning does not always produce extraordinary results. You may be focusing on the core values of providing the highest level of financial advice and service, but are you maintaining an optimum benchmark of efficiency in your business? There are eleven critical areas that a high level financial planning business needs to be successful. Join Marc Spiegel, MS(Tax), CFP®, to discuss time management, client interview systems, and how to transfer 90 day goals to action items. As an entrepreneur you are dependent upon getting new clients from your existing clients. Development of a marketing matrix is a painless method to consistently obtain referrals. Information about the Personal Financial Planning Program, courses being offered in upcoming quarters, and career planning resources available through UC Irvine Extension will also be shared at the end of the session.

Would you like a financial planning internship? Does your company need an intern?
FPA Orange County sponsors a very active internship program for both interns and employers. Individuals who would like to experience working in a financial planning office or those who are seeing if the profession is a good fit can sign up to be an intern. Planners who seek occasional extra help or who might be looking to see how a potential new employee might work out can utilize the services of the intern.
Internships last for approximately ten weeks. Interns need to be able to work at least 10 hours per week to be able to get a good understanding of how a firm functions.
The FPAOC Internship Program has been an ongoing success in our chapter for many years. Both interns and employers have great results. Contact Linda Barlow for more information.
